Iide-town, "Shishi-mai"(Lion Dance)

“Shishi-mai”(Lion dance) is a form of traditional dance in which performers mimic a lion’s movements in a lion costume to bring good luck and fortune. Okura Village, “Taue-Odori”(Dance wishing rice crop)

Okura Village is famous area of rice crop. On the first Sunday of June every year the young guys in the village show dance to wish successful crop in the autumn.(They call “Taue-Odori”.) “Taue” means rice planting. After the farmers plant the rices in May, the festival is held in June accordingly. They start the dance from the local shrine and go around the farmers houses in the village.

Iide-town, experience in the great nature

Thanks to the great nature of this town you can try various kinds of outdoor activities. Among them I recommend you to try canoe and snow mobile. Under Iide Mountain Range you can ride on canoe in Lake Shirakawa. The fee is ¥2500 for adult and ¥1500 for child including instruction fee. Iide-town , mother town of Yonezawa beaf

Lots of foreign visitors are impressed with “Wagyu” (Japanese beaf). Among Wagyu Yonezawa beaf is admired the top brand. Over 40% of Yonezawa beaf is breaded in Iide-town. On first Sunday of July(July 8 in 2018), you can participate the event “Kurobeko festival” and enjoy Yonezawa beaf at reasonable price. You can buy the B-B-Q set for 4 people at ¥15,000. Other food you should try is potato stored in snow warehouse. Thanks to heavy snowfall they have snow warehouse(“Yukimuro”) in which they keep various kinds of foods. Among them potato is so sweet and attract many guests.

Iide-town, Farmhouse-inn

When you visit Iide-town, you are strongly recommended to stay at farmhouse-inn at Nakatsugawa district. There are 8 inns in this district, among which I stay at Ikarashi-inn operated by Mr.and Mrs,Ikarashi. This house was originally built more than 200 years ago. Upon arrival to the inn Mrs.Ikarashi welcomed me with local snack. Mr. and Mrs Ikarashi with me before departure You also can enjoy wonderful dinner and breakfast made by Mrs Ikarashi. Iide town, Oriental Arcadia

  British woman Isabella Bird (famous traveller between late 19 century and early 20 century) was so impressed with warm hospitality and breathtaking view of Iide town and called this area “Oriental Arcadia”.(Shangri-La) In Iide town there are 2 major view points; Iide Mountain Range Iide Mountain Range is called as Alps of Tohoku area and you can see peaks of over 2000m mountains over Lake Shirakawa. Scattered Houses Village in the Paddy field The houses scattered in the space bounded by the vast countryside “Sankyo-son”(Scattered House Village) that plant the tall trees called “Yashiki-rin” around the house is a wisdom to protect their homes from the harsh wind and snow, and it form one of the good old and valuable landscape in Japan.
